Paradise Awaits
We returned to Casa Velas for the 2nd year in a row & we were even more happy with our stay this time! It s the most quiet & peaceful resort we have ever stayed at. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, this is the place to go! The grounds & accommodations are beautiful & the staff could not be more helpful and pleasant! We will be back at Casa Velas again!

A Honeymoon Well Spent
We spent our honeymoon here and couldn't have been happier. Everything from the staff to the bathroom cleanliness was excellent. The food was delicious, the pool and beach club were gorgeous, and the service was incredible. We also used the spa for a couples treatment and were dazzled by the amenities and staff. The location and security were also fantastic. Very close to the marina and it's nightlife, while being only a short drive from the central Puerto Vallarta boardwalk. Finally, the on-site activities were a joy. Each night there was a new theme (e.g. a "Cuba" night, a casino night, etc.) and we loved them all. It was a truly wonderful experience and I wouldn't recommend staying anywhere else.

Others must like it given the ratings. To me it was just ordinary

First impression was quite impressive - guard station and driveway up to the front. Check in - still okay. Really kinda pushy about carrying our carry-on. It was all we had (just there for two nights). Orientation tour was complete. Perhaps trying too hard, but appreciated. Room 402 - this is when it started to go downhill. We paid for an upgraded room but I expected the space to be usable - there must have been 40 sq. feet behind the television tucked into an alcove. The fridge couldn't keep up with the heat. An indication of the A/C effectiveness. The toilet didn't flush completely unless I held it down until the bowl emptied. Wifi signal next to nothing (best spot was head of the bed - literally) and no Ethernet so I couldn't use my local hotspot. And then for the restaurant - there is only one as many have noted. Warm Heineken started our lunch. The flank steak was quite good and tender. Staff way outnumbered the guests so instead of things happening quickly, they happened very slowly. Lunch was average. For Dinner, my Son wanted to order something off the specialty menu (a rice dish). He was told he needed to order the full specialty meal or nothing. (hey - this is all inclusive). Again the main courses were nothing spectacular. When dessert rolled around, I ordered a scoop of vanilla and chocolate - I got one vanilla, one strawberry and one maple. I didn't chalk it up to the language, more like indifference. Breakfast the next morning - our juice arrived after we finished eating. As others have said, there doesn't seem to be a restaurant manager. I could over look many of these restaurant issues in a place that was a lot less expensive. But there are many choices in PV and this one is priced at the higher end. Given this lack of desire to be outstanding, I rate this hotel average. As is often the case, most of the staff was very nice. We enjoyed the casino night and the bartender from the lobby bar only needed to get our order once and he kept them coming. There are two bars and they aren't open at the same time. At check out, we asked if the hotel shuttle could run us over to the airport. A simple request that was met with "what is your room number?" Does it matter? Apparently my $400 a night wasn't enough to warrant this extra perk. The doorman heard it and had someone take us over in the hotel's Suburban. If he can do it, why can't the front desk person do it? There were only about 10 couples staying there plus a couple of families with near adult children. It is not like they were lined up to get cabs. Many years ago we stayed at Velas Vallarta when they were trying to sell the timeshares and I wasn't impressed then - I now realize there is common ownership. Actually explains a lot. Extremely small elevator so bellman has to run up/down the stairs because he can't fit in with you. Stay somewhere else at this price point

Not a True All Inclusive

My comments will echo Ian B's. My husband and I came here for our 32nd anniversary by using a timeshare exchange and upon arrival had to pay an exorbitant amount of AI money per person. I asked if the tips were included and the lady said "yes." Well...for everything requested there is a bill that you have to sign, even a bucket of ice and club soda delivered to the room. On the bottom of EVERY receipt/bill there is a hand written "EXTRA TIP." This is why my rating is a 3 and not a 4. In summary here is a break out of what is great and what is not so great The great: Pleasant staff. Miguel and Carlos at the pool bar, Marco at breakfast, Benny at night in the lounge, Raphael at the help desk (really he is for tours but was very helpful like a Concierge). The grounds were beautiful, the pool and bar was a social gathering, especially from 4-6 PM. The quietness and adult only atmosphere. The good: The food was consistent and better than any other AI I have been to. The beach front location (you walk or take a short shuttle) was very nice and quiet. A nice elegance to both properties. Our room was a first floor one bedroom suite with a private wading pool and patio area to sit and reflect. Very nice experience at the end of the day. The not so great/bad: Constant request for tips The bar presents as premium level alcohol--Absolut, Tanqueray, Grey Goose. Not your usual AI type of alcohol. I did personally question the authenticity of the content but... The daily housekeeping was inconsistent for a property like this We were told that the hotel sells day passes to the locals so you may not be at the resort with just hotel guests. The really bad: Do not accept any offer to go for a timeshare presentation of 90 minutes. You WILL regret the experience. We stupidly went as we were told we could get 2 free tickets ($248 for the tickets if we bought them) to a show that is heavily pushed by everyone--Rhythm of the Nights. The push to but a "fractionated property" was insane and we went thru 7 people to whom we kept saying no and they got quite agitated with us. It took us a day and a half to recover from the forceful 2 hours of pushiness. Walk away, do not buy

Disappointing Visit

Spent last week at Casa Velas. Initially I considered the room to be a studio rather than a one bedroom unit which we reserved. The Manager told me they were full and couldn't adjust the accommodation for three days, however I never heard from him again. The TV reception was non existent until a technician came and managed to get CNN, ESPN2 and FOX news. There were no domestic stations available. The maid service did not always replace hand towels and wash cloths. Dirty dishes from room service were left outside on wall for three days. Men's poolside bathrooms need more frequent cleaning. On a positive note food quality and presentation were very good, unfortunately food service was very poor spoiling the overall meal. Elevator not always in service making it difficult for people with walking problems to get around. Hot water in bathroom took up to five minutes to come through even after someone came to check. This is not worthy of a four or five star rating even with an attractive Beach Club facility. Have no intention of returning in the near future. I prefer to stay at their sister resort or the Grand Mayan in Nuevo Vallarta for the four weeks we visit each year
